How to install Skype on Xubuntu 16.04

Skype is one of the most popular chat and video call application, skype is maintain by microsoft, but that doesn't mean it's only available on windows, in fact skype also available on mac, linux, and mobile phones. In this article i will show you how to install skype on xubuntu 16.04.

At the time i'm writing this article the current version of skype for linux is version 5.5 and it is labeled as beta, i can't find the stable version anywhere.

Step by step how to install Skype on Xubuntu 16.04
  • download skype for linux debian package (skypeforlinux-64.deb)
  • open command line/terminal on xubuntu (press CTRL + ALT + T)
  • assuming the skype for linux debian package is located at ~/Downloads/, then you can install skype with this command:
  • sudo dpkg -i ~/Downloads/skypeforlinux-64.deb
  • enjoy skype on linux!
Once installed you can open skype from xubuntu start menu > Internet > Skype for Linux Beta

Skype alternative
When you use skype for linux, it is expected to have some bugs, that's why this thing is labeled as 'beta'. The development of skype for linux is very slow, it's been beta for ages, microsoft seems to ignore skype for linux. If you are not happy with this situation, you can always use skype for web, this is a good solution because all you need is a web browser and internet connection.

Skype for web is a good solution if you still want to use skype, another solution is to use skype on mobile phones, skype is available for android, ios, and windows phone. The last option (if skype is really important for you) is to use skype on windows operating system, it has better support than skype for linux.
