How to install Slack on Xubuntu 16.04

Slack is a team collaboration tool and service, where you can communicate with you team member through individual chat or group chat. You can also share files and integrate slack with other services such as github, jenkins and many more.

Normally you can just use your web browser to open slack.com and login with your account, but it's more convenient to use slack client program on your computer. Slack client/Slack app is available for some operating system, including xubuntu. So in this tutorial i'm going to show you how to install slack client program on xubuntu 16.04.

Slack client software is not available on official xubuntu/ubuntu repository at the moment, but we still can install it from other place. Installing slack program on xubuntu is not that hard, just follow my step by step tutorial below and you will be fine.

Step by step how to install Slack client app on Xubuntu 16.04
  • open slack for linux download page
  • download the ubuntu (64 bit) version (debian package/ .deb)
  • open command line/terminal on xubuntu (press CTRL + ALT + T)
  • navigate to ~/Downloads/ folder, assuming the debian package is located there
  • cd ~/Downloads
  • install slack with this command (assuming the name of the debian package is slack-desktop-2.8.1-amd64.deb)
  • sudo dpkg -i slack-desktop-2.8.1-amd64.deb
  • congratulation you just install slack on xubuntu!

Once installed you can start using slack by opening it from xubuntu start menu > Internet > Slack.
